My vanity

As many of you know, I'm always on the hunt for pretty vintage pieces, and I have a serious ~~hoarding problem~~ ~~obsession~~ collection of costume jewelry. The problem is, I've never had a designated spot to really display these pieces -- until now. I found this refinished gem at a local thrift store before Christmas, and a few weeks later, every little earring, pin, necklace and lipstick has finally found a special place to live. I brought my favorite vintage frames out from hiding -- in the closet -- and filled them with some of my most cherished pictures. My favorite is the strip of Elene's headshots from the 1920's (see another picture of her here) -- she was my great-grandmother's sister, and a model for Rich's in Atlanta! I think that she was just the prettiest.

The hand mirror and jewelry tray are antique shop finds, and the glass jewelry box and mercury glass lamp are from TJ Maxx/Homegoods. I also just scored a stool (that needs a little TLC) for $5 at another local thrift store, and until I can whip out the spray paint to spruce up the legs, this vintage embroidered cushion really gave it an instant face lift.

Guest Bath Makeover?

Is decorating a house a project that's ever really finished? Maybe for some people -- I have decided that I'm just too easily stirred. Lately I've been wanting to tackle our guest bath upstairs -- in addition to our guest room -- and paint it a light, airy color. It's a tiny room that desperately needs a little color. I recently made the jump and bought this floral gem, and now I just need to work the room around these bright, beautiful pinks, greys and greens. Stay tuned for more (much to James's dismay!)

After a bit of a hiatus, I'm bringin' back the Weekly Instagram series to the blog. One thing some of you shared via my reader survey was to include a weekly feature of some kind -- something inspiring for readers to look forward to every week. So, I'm going to be honest -- I'm not very good with remembering to post regularly -- say, every Wednesday. And if I do remember, it'll likely be at the last minute, leaving me scrambling to come up with something creative and worthy of y'all's time...and truthfully, it's probably not going to be that great. To me, strict scheduling kinda takes the "spark" out of blogging -- know what I mean?

That being said, Instagram is easily one of my favorite iPhone apps, and I love sharing the photos that I find most inspiring from week to week with you guys. So, it's back!

Just please don't hold it against me if I forget and skip a week!

Lazy Casserole

Last night, James and I whipped up an edited version of this "lazy casserole," and we pretended it was even more enjoyable because it was a hearty meal to warm us up on a chilly night (it so wasn't -- what is UP with our crazy warm southern winter?!) Ever since I saw the recipe via Pinterest, I knew we had to try it. So, without further ado, here's how to make it:

Ingredients:

4 sausages (beef or pork)
1 pound potatoes
1/2 pound carrots
1/2 bell pepper
1 large onion
1 fennel bulb
2 garlic cloves
2 tbsp oil
freshly cracked black pepper
1 1/2 tsp Italian herbs
1/2 cup chicken broth
4 tbsp balsamic vinegar

Here's the low-down, broken down how-to:

Dice and chop up all vegetables -- and any others -- to a size that you prefer. For our "casserole," we used fennel, sweet onion, mushrooms, red potatoes, baby carrots and pre-cooked chicken and apple sausage (yum). Pretty much any combination of veggies and meat will work just fine. Mix seasonings, broth and balsamic vinegar in a bowl, and pour it over the vegetables. Bake for about 1 hour in the oven at 450 degrees, and you'll have one delicious "lazy casserole."

Weekend + inspired by the color PINK

How was your weekend? We -- B and me -- were pretty lazy while the hubs was busy working. It was a rainy and nasty couple of days in Georgia, and other than hiding away in our old, local bookstore for a few hours on Friday afternoon, I stayed inside (and got a little stir crazy).

Which means I pinned. A lot. And now I'm inspired make our space pretty for Valentine's Day. It's a holiday that I usually don't get too excited about, but this year's going to be different. And another thing? I'm kind of in love with the light, barely-there shade of blush -- well, pink. I've been toying with the idea of painting the walls in our guest room this color, but have yet to decide (and oy, how I loathe painting walls). What do you think?

A Fun Party Idea

Last month, a customer asked me to create an invitation for her son's "Pajama Birthday Breakfast" party -- and I thought: Best. Idea. Ever. Being December, this particular mom was insanely busy with the holidays -- hosting family, buying presents, etc. etc. etc., but as she said, it wasn't her son's fault he was born in the midst of holiday chaos! She wanted to host a party for him that was fun but also easy -- and a breakfast party fit the bill. She stacked donuts to make a "cake," added a few cute straws to glasses of milk, and served breakfast casserole and mimosas to the adults. I illustrated an invitation for a boys' pajama breakfast party (and just recently, one for girls, too -- shout out to Kristine and Violet!). Both invites are officially on sale in the shop! ...and now I'm craving a donut and mimosa. Sigh.

Vintage Vinyl

James and I have been eyeing one of these for a long time, and we finally treated ourselves at Christmastime and bought the sucker. (We'd been collecting vintage records at thrift stores for months, so it seemed kinda like we had to get one eventually). It's no secret that vinyl is making a comeback, and I was eager to see what all the fuss was about.

Well, to be honest, I'm not sure if the records sound any different compared to CDs, but having the record player on our table in the living room gives the area a bit of nostalgia that I love -- and it's just fun to play records. And you can buy them at thrift stores for a quarter! We've collected quite a stash, including John Denver (my family listened to him so much when I was a child, and I love him), Billy Joel, Anne Murray, Petula Clark -- this is my favorite Petula song --, Ray Charles, Elvis, Three Dog Night -- this is hands down my go-to karaoke song, always -- Olivia Newton John and The Beach Boys. It is really nice to turn off the tv, put on some music, and relax. And when we're cleaning house, you better believe that some Three Dog Night is blaring from the record player. It makes dusting way more fun.

We have yet to buy any new albums on vinyl, and I wanted to ask you guys -- any new albums that you're raving about? Do you own any vinyl, and if so, what are your favorite vintage records?

Did you guys watch the Golden Globes last night? I am a sucker for award shows -- I love everything about them. I thought the red carpet was a little "meh" -- where were the bright, rich colors? Red and pink were the only colors that caught my eye last night, including this number worn by Elle Macpherson. I also loved Angelina's dash of red and Charlize Theron's Dior gown -- pretty in pink indeed! I was having flashbacks to my childhood Barbie doll collection circa 1987 -- are puffy fishtail skirts and dramatic, asymmetrical dresses coming back in style?! I kinda hope so.

How was your weekend? James and I went to Americas Mart in Atlanta on Saturday, and we saw a flash mob. Coolest thing ever!

Sunday was spent working, cleaning and relaxing on the couch with B, watching the Golden Globes (more on this later!) It was a great weekend. James has been working so much since October, and since the holidays were a -- super fun -- blur, it was nice to have a few days all to ourselves.

Also, the surveys keep pouring in, and I can't thank y'all enough for all of the great feedback! While this blog is my place to write about my life, inspirations, projects, vintage finds, etc. etc. etc. -- I want to know what you all are interested in reading/seeing, too -- after all, interacting with you guys is one of the reasons I love to blog. Happy weekend, friends! I am meeting friends tonight in Atlanta at one of my fave restaurants, One Midtown Kitchen, and I can't wait to see everyone and catch up over good wine and good food. And since Anthropologie is practically right across the street (well...highway) I will probably stop in and try my luck on the sale racks (I scored a ton of loot at 50% off before Christmas!) You just never know what you might find. The thrill of the hunt...it's what I live for.

I wanted to leave y'all with two unique styling photos I spotted via Park & Cube and Sterling Style. Since I have an excess of vintage crystal jewelry lying around, I want to try this look for myself! Knotted scarves are the cat's meow, too. I love this idea!

Mel + Westin Galloway Nuptials (and my wedding fans!)

Not too long ago, I was busy making these in the shop for a sweet high school friend and her husband-to-be. Well, now they -- Mel and Westin -- are enjoying life as newlyweds, and pictures of their stunning wedding are hot off the presses! They were married on the steps of Atlanta's Galloway School -- keepin' it in the family -- and had a beautiful outdoor reception. I especially love how Mel incorporated "library book cards" for her seating chart. Their cake was also very similar to ours -- but I love how they incorporated color into the design!

Of course, I was tickled pink when I saw the professional shots of the wedding fans I made -- they were a ton of fun to make, and I'm glad they turned out so well (shout-out to my Athens print shop, Bel-Jean!)

New Year's Resolution: Organize where I work

With the new year comes excessive discussion about one thing: new year's resolutions. Usually, I'm a fan. Setting a few -- attainable -- goals for myself keeps me on track. As many of you know, I'm a collector and a treasure hunter, and I find that when I surround myself with these objects, I'm inspired on a daily basis and I work much better. The trick is to organize my treasures and steer clear of any clutter -- a dirty word in our house.

Working from home allows me to work in whatever space I want, and I want it to be colorful and filled with things I love. I'm captivated by the above photos (via Amanda Teal) -- what an amazing work space! These photos are already tacked up in my office to use as inspiration.

So I'd love to hear -- where do you work, and what do you keep in your space to inspire you on a daily basis?

Wanted: A datebook to keep me organized

I'm usually good at keeping a planner up to date with everything from friends' birthdays to my next doctor's appointment, but this past year I just didn't keep up with my to-do lists the way I should have (and had to send a few belated birthday messages because of it! Yikes!) I think a spiral bound, smaller planner will be more convenient and fit in well with my work space (and a pretty, bright color won't hurt, either). The little jewel I currently have my eye on is the sky blue planner from Paper Source -- and it's on sale, too, so what's not to love?

Happy 2012, everyone! How did you ring in the new year? One of my girlfriends was in town, and we took it easy with James on the couch, sipping champagne, watching Kathy Griffin and Anderson Cooper count down to midnight -- did anyone else watch them? They are a great match and hilarious to watch. I was giggling all the way through their special -- partly because Kathy Griffin makes Anderson squirm every five seconds, but also because Anderson's high-pitched giggle is contagious.

I hope you all enjoy your final day of vacation, and I look forward to all the hope and possibilities 2012 has to offer! How are you spending your first day of the new year? What are you most looking forward to accomplishing in 2012?

2011, you were good to us. This year, we bought and moved in to our first house, we went on a crazy road trip up the east coast and back, and we hosted Thanksgiving (17 people!) and another 12 this Christmas at our home. Playing grown-ups is fun. (Which I guess we are, now, huh? I still think of myself as 22 sometimes. Does anyone else do that?) We've made lots of new friends, James is thriving at his hospital and my small business is growing bigger by the day. We are so thankful.

And now it is the new year, and it's time to reflect on the past and plan for the future. "Living in the now" is what I'd like to do more of. Who knows what else 2012 will bring? I'm excited...and ready!

And just like that -- Christmas has come and gone! It never lasts long enough. This year the fam was all about new traditions. My parents and brother drove to Athens to stay with us for a few nights over the holiday, and we relaxed, made Christmas cookies, listened to our favorite Christmas record (a childhood fave of ours), watched Elf, and snacked way, way too much. James's mom and stepfather ate Christmas Eve dinner with us, and the candlelight Christmas Eve service was just lovely. The stain glass windows looked so pretty and Christmasy at night, gilded gold. (They are also quite pretty in the daytime).

I stayed true to my Christmas breakfast menu (not pictured: egg nog muffins in lieu of the original French toast muffins, by request) -- the breakfast cups were de-lic-ious and so easy to make! ~~James~~ Santa brought me a vintage Scrabble set (I'm in love) and left James a Dexter kill shirt (that's not morbid or anything, right?) and plenty of Star Wars goodies, like this hoodie and this ice cube tray. Christmas dinner was perfect, and we had a crowd at the house -- my aunts and uncles, James's dad and stepmother and my grandmother -- not to mention two new furry friends: my parents' dog, Mollie, and Clint's girlfriend's dog, Chloe. We love our family and are so thankful almost everyone lives fairly close by so we can celebrate together for the holidays! We're two lucky ducks.

I hope Santa was good to everyone else, too! Can you believe 2012 is around the corner?! It's really true -- the older you get, the faster the years fly by. Sometimes I just want to stop time and enjoy every moment just a little bit more...don't you?

Christmas Eve

Christmas Eve is just around the corner! I am making our favorite comfort dinner for our parents with a side salad -- and late night, who knows, we might even get a little crazy with some white hot chocolate (!). One of my favorite things about the holidays is to set the table, and for Christmas I'm planning to recycle my burlap table cloths I originally used for Thanksgiving dinner. I'm going to tie a little jingle or silver ball to the napkins, and I'm switching up the color palette from burnt orange and red to the jewel tones of the season (the words "jewel tones" just sound pretty, don't they?).

A Little Merry Merry to Me

James and I have acquired a few new treasures for our home this holiday season. I have been hunting foreva for an art deco vanity with a round mirror, and a random stop into the local thrift store presented me with a beautiful treasure (someone even recently refinished it!) at a fraction of the cost I've seen tagged to similar pieces at antique stores. I lugged it home and set it up in our bedroom, and I've had lots of fun primping ever since. I just need to find a little chair to match the size of the vanity so I'm not sitting up high on a bar stool. Baby steps.

We also found a pretty rug at TJ Maxx over the weekend to put in our nook (it matches our retro teal desk perfectly!). I am still pinching myself over the score. If you can't tell, B has taken quite a liking to it, too :)

DIY Snow Globes

After spotting some Mason jar snow globes at Anthopologie a few weeks ago, I was determined to make my own for much less money ($38 for something I can make for less than $3? Now that's just silly!)

Friends, I am happy to say that they are so, so easy to make! First, you need Mason jars in various sizes (or any canning jar, salt shaker, cookie jar, etc.!). For snow, fill with white glitter flakes. You can use the "snow" they sell in craft stores, but I realized really quickly that the faux snow is very messy...and I'd rather use glitter because it's much easier to clean up if something goes horribly wrong (like knocking the glitter tube all over the floor. Which I did. Sigh.)

Next, buy your snow globe decor -- the fun part! I bought a bottle brush tree set at Michael's half-off on Black Friday, so I had a ton of trees in various sizes to choose from. I also bought a small package of red sleds in the "Christmas village" section of the craft store to go with the trees.

Once I got home and started to assemble my globes, I remembered my childhood miniature animal collection -- I have everything from rabbits to teeny tiny pigs to unicorns...and what else was I ever going to do with them? They fit perfectly inside the jars with the bottle brush trees, and voilà! the DIY snow globes were complete in less than an hour (with the help of a hot glue gun, that is.)

So have any of you made these this year or in the past? Several people have told me that they made these years ago, so I can't believe I'm just now hearing about them! I love the little globes -- they are an inexpensive, festive way to spruce up your house for the holidays, and they were super fun to make, too.

This morning I am in awe of Nicole Balch's finished dollhouse that she made for daughter Eleanor via the "I'm a Giant" challenge. It's so perfect that I wish I could shrink to Polly Pocket size and live inside these walls -- or at least recreate the credenza (handmade by One Forty Three -- have you heard of them? They make amazing miniature retro furniture) and gold bar cart to go in my life-size house. This year, family is coming to stay with us Christmas Eve and Christmas night, so part II of the Kilgore holiday hosting with the most is right around the corner! I've been searching for the perfect breakfast recipes, and I think I've found them: Martha's bacon, egg and toast cups and the Urban Baker's French toast muffins. Since we're having a late dinner Christmas day, I wanted to make something filling for breakfast, but I didn't want to slave in the kitchen all morning, either.

The Great Depression in Color

My dad, knowing I love anything old -- especially old photos -- sent me a link to a collection of color photographs taken during the Great Depression (formally in an exhibit titled: Bound for Glory: America in Color).

We're so used to seeing this era through black and white, grainy photographs, which always makes me feel disconnected to the people in the pictures. But the high quality of these images makes me feel like I could know these people -- some photos don't even look like they were taken over 80 years ago.

Trash to Treasure: $6 Advent Calendar

Over the summer on one of our many thrifting adventures, James and I found a wooden advent calendar on the shelves at Goodwill. The poor thing had seen better days, but the minute I saw it, I loved it and knew it had major potential.

I've wanted an advent calendar for years, but the price tags I've seen on cute models at Target and Pottery Barn have never seemed appropriate. This advent tree actually looks very similar to one I had my eye on at Pottery Barn a couple of years ago (seen here) -- so imagine my delight when I found this little gem, just waiting for me to take him home for a makeover!

Like I said, the guy needed some TLC. After spending about 23 extra bones, I painted, cleaned and turned the above find into this:

Now the pretty gold and white advent calendar sits on our buffet for all to see and enjoy. We donated the tiny ornaments it came with and placed small chocolates behind each door instead...because chocolate trumps all this time of year.

This morning I am getting lost in these photos and wishing James and I could hop in the Mini and drive through New York City again (you know, because it's not that far away and all). Weekend

Happy Monday! The weekend was great; my mom drove to Athens Friday night to go out to dinner with us and help me at my first craft show the next day. The show was so fun -- I think I'm addicted. I've never showed my work to a large group of people before, and everyone was so nice! One of my favorite moments ever is when a little girl wanted some of my cards so badly that she literally started throwing a temper tantrum in front of her father (wait for it)...and her slightly older brother came back around before leaving to use his allowance money to buy her some cards for Christmas. How adorable is that?

Seriously, I think my most favorite thing about Christmastime is opening the mailbox every day to see a chunk of holiday cards from friends and family. It is the best. Snail mail rocks, but especially this time of year. I had my eye on Pinhole Press for our Christmas cards, but I realized too late that there wasn't really a "good" picture of James and me together this year -- not even from our road trip! It was a bit of poor planning on my part. However, inspired by Rifle, I painted a very basic illustration of our family (including little B, of course) and I'm sending this out instead.

The happiest place on earth

Last weekend my cousin got married in Orlando, so my family drove to Florida the day after Thanksgiving (after a little Black Friday shopping, of course). I didn't get any good photos of the bride, but that could be because I was too enamored with baby Penny (she has grown so much in a year!) I tried my best to snuggle with her as much as I could, but she obviously wanted to be in my mom's lap to play with her sunglasses instead. Oh well.

James and I decided that we couldn't leave the area without visiting Disney World. We chose to go to the Animal Kingdom on Sunday, and we had a blast. The park wasn't too crowded, the weather was perfect, and we rode almost everything -- twice! The best ride at the park is the animal safari -- you drive around 500 acres of land in an open air jeep to see lions, cheetahs, rhinos, crocodiles and my favorite -- giraffes. They get so close to you -- I felt like I could almost touch them! It was an amazing experience. We went first thing in the morning and again before the park closed...and a word of advice, if you're planning on visiting anytime soon...go on the safari in the morning when all the animals are eating their breakfast, because they're likely to be roaming about. When we went the second time, there were hardly any animals to see! Either way, it was a blast of a day, and we rode the roller coaster three times (and my head was swimming afterwards).

Besides, is there anywhere happier than Disney World when it's all decorated for Christmas?

When it comes to food-related vices, I am a salty kind of gal, but something about the few weeks leading up to Christmas makes my sweet tooth ache for treats like my mother's pound cake and those white chocolate covered Oreos (seriously. dangerous.) I like the idea of giving sweets as gifts to friends and neighbors in cute Mason jars tied with ribbon and a little handmade to: from: tag -- and maybe even a recipe card so your friend can make the same treat for someone else and pass it on. Thoughtful, practical and budget friendly gifts for just about everyone on your Christmas list! It doesn't get much better than that.

Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving, a little late...

I've mentioned it a few times, but the Kilgore household seated 17 people for Thanksgiving dinner, and since we don't have a dining room, we had to get creative with the space we have! There is a "nook" landing at the top of our stairs, so I set up a folding table for six and used our pretty benches to seat people on either side. Downstairs I fixed up the kitchen table, the counter and a little card table for the rest of the bunch -- it all worked out perfectly! Since the group was a mix of people that hadn't met before, I decided to make last-minute place cards for everyone. It's times like these that I'm glad I like to hoard random paper goods, stamps and hole punches (I knew they'd come in handy one day!)

It was a wonderful evening with new friends and our families -- it really hit me how fortunate James and I are to have so many fantastic people in our lives. We are very thankful indeed!

Holiday gift wrapping ideas

I love to think of new, creative ways to wrap a gift -- sometimes that's just as much fun as giving what's inside.

Ideas I've spotted lately that I love:

Stamped brown packing paper. It's as easy as buying a roll of packing paper at Walmart and stamping your favorite stamp (using a white ink pad) all over it!
These feather gift tags are so pretty. Paper-Source is my favorite store to shop for fancy paper, but scrapbook paper at your craft store will do the trick, too.
Cookbook wrapping idea by Sweet Paul -- tie a whimsical dish towel and cooking utensil to the card!
Wrap a gift for the kiddos with a good ol' fashioned jump rope -- and save on ribbon while you're at it.

So tell me -- do you like to wrap your gifts creatively, or do you hate the task of gift wrapping every year? My advice would be to do a little wrapping each week leading up to the holidays -- if you wait to do it until the last minute...I recommend making a stiff cocktail to get you through the task.

It's here -- the day before Thanksgiving! What are you all doing for the holiday this year? I know I mentioned it before, but James and I are hosting 17 people at our house tomorrow, and we couldn't be more excited. There is nothing I like more than a full house! This year, I'm thankful for the little things -- watching the leaves fall from our big, old tree for the first time, Athens' twinkle lights signaling that Christmas is right around the corner, and holiday craft shows...I'm participating in my first two shows in December, and I'm so excited! What are the little things that you're thankful for this year?

Friday I'll be Black Friday shopping, (like a crazy person), cleaning up the house and leaving for Florida with James -- my cousin gets married on Saturday, and the whole fam will be together to celebrate and possibly make an impromptu Sunday trip to Disney World before coming home on Monday (woohoo!)

One of the things I do when I need to zone out and relax is pull colors from a favorite photo (often swiped from Pinterest). I guess it calms me because it's such a mindless activity, letting me focus on something small...and pretty. The task almost always works its magic and gets me back on track -- happy, inspired and ready to get moving again. It's amazing what colors can be pulled from nature -- this parrot's feathers are the most beautiful shades of grey and pink! Wouldn't this color scheme look great in a living room?

This weekend James and I stayed at my parents' house for a little pre-Thanksgiving cheer. We played our favorite game, Bananagrams, caught up over lots of coffee and ate copious amounts of turkey, sweet potato casserole and pecan pie. The Crowley side of the family came to visit on Saturday, and I had a ball with my brother, cousins, aunts and uncles (oh, and Mollie the dog, too). My outfit was very autumnal -- vintage Levi blouse, brown tights, pumps and pumpkin orange shorts I scored at Anthropologie for $20! Yes ma'm.

Natty Michelle Christmas Cards

Christmas cards are back in the shop!

Every holiday season I look forward to opening up the mailbox every afternoon to see who's sent us a Christmas card -- my friends and family are a pretty creative bunch. This year I was planning to send out a Christmas card of us on our road trip, but it wasn't until I got home that I realized there isn't really a picture of us...together. James pointed out that it might be weird to send a Christmas card where one side of the card is me in front of the NYC skyline and the other is of him in front of the clock tower in Boston. Yeah, agreed.

So what I think I might do this year is illustrate a card -- complete with little caricatures of us. I've also been busy lately making new city-themed cards -- so far, Atlanta, Athens and Washington D.C. are finished and ready for sale! Several people have requested that I make holiday cards for their cities, too, so on the way are New Orleans, Charlottesville and New York City.

Weekend

Our weekend was cozy and laid back -- we tailgated with friends on Saturday before the football game...but opted to watch it in the comfort of our living room with take-out instead of going to the stadium. Plus, staying in meant we could watch SNL late-night, which we rarely get to do. And what a great episode! We were all giggling so hard at different parts that there may or may not have been a few snorts here and there (guilty). Vintage Gallery Wall

When we were driving home on the last day of our road trip, we stopped in several thrift stores off the highway -- it's kinda one of our favorite things to do. You just never know where a hidden treasure may be lurking...

We found an old piece of painted wood with a beautiful gold frame (upper left corner)...with a horrific picture of a Thomas Jefferson-look alike inside (not pictured). I saw the beauty in that little frame -- all it needed was a fresh coat of paint! I painted it the same shade of mint that I painted our half-bath, and voilà! Instantly improved.

I've been collecting old picture frames for about a year, not sure what I was going to do with them, (a familiar pattern in my life), including these paint-by-number bird portraits that I bought off Etsy a few months ago. James had the idea to hang a picture collage on the wall going up the stairs, and I thought, why not make it an homage to all of the fabulous women in both of our lives -- past and present? Our mothers, grandmothers and my great-grandmother -- Ms. Dena -- and her pretty sister, Elene, (in the blue hat) are all there, smiling at us on a daily basis.

And that little mint and gold jewel just sparkles in the afternoon sun, don't you think?

One of my favorite things to do when I have some downtime -- insert sarcasm here -- is read a really good book. I love the Kindle because you can sample a book before you buy it, but lately I've been a little disappointed in my purchases. It's like I get past the sample portion that got me hooked, and then the rest of the book is ho-hum. That is the worst!

I don't know about you guys, but retailers' "Christmas in November" marketing scheme is definitely working on me. I'm such a sucker. Books are one of my favorite gifts to give, and here's a list of what I'll be wrapping up for friends and family this year:

Just Being Audrey // Is there really a sweeter book to inspire a little girl?
Southern My Way // Our spring cover girl, Gena Knox, knocks it out of the park with this cookbook. The recipes are stellar, and the photography in the book is to die for.
Queen Bees and Wannabees // Kind of a Debbie Downer to give as a Christmas gift, but I told my sisters-in-law that they need to read it -- it's an eye-opener of a book for anyone with a daughter (says the girl who isn't a parent!)
I Can Fly // The cutest little Golden book; I'll take a book illustrated by Mary Blair any day of the week.
Stories I Only Tell My Friends // A real page-turner; Rob Lowe has had some crazy things happen in his life. And none of it is anything you'd suspect.
This is New York // I adore every book in this series; why not teach your child about the most fabulous cities in the world as early as possible?
Design*Sponge at Home // With all of the home decor books out there, this one is unique and inspiring -- it's everything I love about Grace's blog and more.
The Paris Wife // Ernest Hemmingway's life with first wife Hadley is an exciting, romantic tale that I greatly enjoyed getting lost in for hours at a time.
Love the One You're With // All of Giffin's books are juicy, scandalous and hard to put down, but this one was my favorite. I think I stayed up until 3 am one night -- quite by accident -- because I couldn't find a stopping place!

Ellie's 1st Birthday + Natty Michelle Owl Invites

Not too long ago, a childhood friend of mine, Lauren, contacted me to make her little girl's 1st birthday party invitations. Ellie's birthday was full of little owls and light blue, pink and gold -- I had so much fun with the idea for the invites (who doesn't love anything owl-themed?) Today I died over the cuteness of Lauren's party photos when I saw them for the first time -- her mom crocheted all of Ellie's friends tiny owl caps as party favors, and little ribbon topiaries flanked the guest book (and my framed invite!) next to the front door. Plus, that little birthday stinker is pretty darn cute, too, don't you think?

Hues of Blue

The color blue seems to be speaking to me lately. I'm still in love with wallpaper (but still frown at the price tag) and after seeing this kitchen tile (and Genevieve's blue bathroom tile via Design Sponge at Home -- has anyone else seen it?!) I'm regretting my white subway tile choice and wishing I'd taken a risk with something a little bolder. These are a few of my favorite photos and pieces I've collected for inspiration. Weekend

How was everyone's weekend? Saturday we drove to Atlanta for Heather's baby shower, (we are over the moon excited to meet baby-to-be Henry this December!), ate brunch at our favorite place and enjoyed a late night campfire with our neighbors. We also spotted a family of deer in our backyard yesterday morning! What a beautiful weekend full of perfect weather, great company and big, full moons, day and night.

Today is my mama's birthday...so I am meeting her in Atlanta for lunch + a glass of wine. So happy, happy birthday, mom! I love you.

Road Trip Day 7 + 8: Baltimore, Maryland + Richmond, Virginia

On the last two days of our trip, we were trying to make it down the east coast as quickly as possible, but we couldn't pass up visits to Baltimore (crab cake, anyone?) and Richmond. We spent the afternoon and evening in Baltimore, shopped the stores along the water and stopped to snap a few pictures of the pretty, light blue and pink sunset. After asking one of my friends -- a Baltimore native -- where to get the best crab cake, he told me to try LP Steamers, and we weren't disappointed. Yum.

Our stop through Richmond was the last day of our trip, and we explored the Carytown neighborhood, known for it's cute shops and restaurants. We stumbled across the best vintage stores -- Luxor and Bygones -- definitely must-sees if you're ever in the area, and ate a scrumptious lunch at Millie's Diner (did I mention that we might've gained a couple of lbs. this trip?! Sheesh). And even though I didn't bump into Bethenny or Genevieve when we took our Sunday stroll through Central Park 6 days earlier, (dorky, but a girl can hope), I did run into blogebrity Sherry Petersik of Young House Love fame in a Richmond boutique (!) -- and she was so sweet. It was such a surprise, so I hope I didn't geek out too much when I subtly asked her if she was who I thought she was! Seriously, what are the chances?

Our drive home was spent with the sunroof open, blasting music and stopping at random Goodwills off the expressway to break up the day (our favorite pastime). I scored a few goodies that I'll definitely share here later. When we finally got home at 1 am, we were tired...but we agree that we'd go on a crazy road trip again someday. It was for sure a blast.

Fitz at the 40 Watt

James and I saw Fitz and the Tantrums last night at the 40 Watt, and I have to say, I've never seen a better show, ever. Maybe it's because their sound combines all of my favorite genres of music -- and their stage presence has crazy energy -- but seriously, the show was a giant dance party and so. much. fun.

When the band left the stage, and the cheering was deafening for them to return for an encore -- and it went on for at least 5 minutes! They seemed genuinely touched by all the love. Athens made me proud last night.

And I totally got to meet Noelle Scaggs and Michael Fitzpatrick, the lead singers, after the show, but of course -- the one night I don't bring my camera, my iPhone failed in the dark corner of the 40 Watt. Shoot.

In short, we had a maaagical night with the Fitz! Go see them if they're coming to your town...they put on an excellent show.

Athens Design Sponge Event

Last night my friend Erin and I went to the Design Sponge book signing event at Cine in Athens, and we had a blast. It was so good to see some friends from the blogosphere, meet Grace, listen to Corduroy Road and play with the Smilebooth (so addicting and fun -- but there are some ruuurl scary pictures of me that are out there somewhere!) It was good, good times. And I loved the booth backdrop made by the talented Miss Ginny Branch Stelling. Isn't it pretty?

Road Trip Day 6: Portland, Maine + White Mountain National Forest, New Hampshire

Portland was just as I'd pictured it: chilly, misty and eerily beautiful. The clouds were like nothing we'd ever seen before -- it looked almost as if a giant grey fluffy blanket was covering the sky. We enjoyed fresh lobster rolls for lunch and giggled at the sign on the deck -- even though it was drizzling, seagulls were perched over the restaurant hoping and waiting for a tourist to drop a little seafood in their direction.

One of James's friends from work used to live in New Hampshire, and he said we couldn't leave the area without driving the Kancamagus Scenic Byway -- 30ish miles of pretty trees with orange, yellow and red foliage and breathtaking mountain views through White Mountain National Forest. The scenery was something I'll never forget -- the entire drive kept my nose glued to the car windows (and out of the iPad) so I wouldn't miss anything. Even though we didn't get to see a moose (shoot) and it was pouring down rain, we loved that we got to see that part of the country at its finest time during the year.

In Salem, I stumbled across a display of Donya O'Brien's jewelry...custom, repurposed pieces made of vintage buttons, lace and beads. I couldn't leave without a pair of her button earrings, so I bought the light blue and brown flowered pair (seen above, and on moi, here). I love that from far away, they twinkle almost like they're vintage stones, not buttons. You can find Donya, a New England native, here. I think any of her pieces would make the perfect holiday gift, don't you?

Road Trip Day 4 + 5: Salem, Massachusetts

Day two of our trip to Salem was a full day, just like the first, and the places we wanted to see were musts before we left: Old Burying Point Cemetery, the Salem Witch Trial Memorial, Nathaniel Hawthorne's house and the House of the Seven Gables (and a gigantic ice cream cone from Captain Dusty's, too, in the company of an adorable pooch). Our visit to the cemetery was amazing -- it's not everyday that you see graves in the US that date back to the 1600s. The Salem Witch Trail Memorial, too, was a stunning sight -- engraved stones jut out of the cemetery wall and list the names of each of the 20 (!) "witches" and the way they died. Quotes taken from their last moments are engraved into the stone entryway.

Nathaniel Hawthorne's home (moved in the 1950s down the street to its current site, next to the House of Seven Gables) was a great tour -- it's amazing how these homes have been preserved for future generations to enjoy. We even got to walk through a secret passageway in the House of Seven Gables! I wish I was allowed to take pictures, because walking up through a secret staircase inside a super old home is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done. Can you imagine living in an old home and discovering a secret wall with a secret stairwell?! Coolest thing ever.

We loved our time in Salem, and we'd like to go back one day. We headed north after checking out of the Inn for the last leg of our trip -- Portland, Maine, White Mountain National Park, New Hampshire, Baltimore, Maryland and Richmond, Virginia. More to come, but in the meantime...

...how was everyone's Halloween? We had a grand total of 7 trick-or-treaters, and since it was our first time handing out candy as homeowners, we were thrilled. At dusk, James got the candy together, put Thriller on repeat and turned all the porch lights on to let the neighborhood know we were open for business. I was going to feel really sorry for him if we didn't have any ghouls and goblins ring our doorbell! My favorites were my neighbors' kids -- they were the cutest. I hope y'all had a great time last night, and have a great first day of November today!

Road Trip Day 4 + 5: Salem, Massachusetts

Day 4 and 5 of our road trip were spent in Salem, Massachusetts, infamous for the Salem Witch Trials, among other things (so it's appropriate that I'm writing this on the spookiest day of the year -- Halloween!). Let me first say that we had a ball in this little town -- I highly recommend it for a weekend getaway, especially in the fall. The Salem Inn was a great place to stay -- it was the one place where we splurged on the road trip, and it was worth it. The inn was comfortable, and we loved that the walls had seen so much history. It was built in the 1700s and was converted to one-room apartments when it served as a male boarding house for much of the 20th century (a la the old sign of "house rules" framed over the check-in counter!). While we had a great two night stay at the Salem Inn, I am sorry to report that we didn't see a single ghost. You can't have it all, I suppose.

For it being October in one of the most Halloween-hyped cities in the country, it was relatively quiet, but the weather was gorgeous and we couldn't complain -- it was nice that we sometimes felt we had the town all to ourselves. Salem has a red paint line on the sidewalk that guides walking tourists around the town, taking you to everything you want to see -- no map necessary, and all for free. I loved the old neighborhoods with historical markers by the front doors of homes, wacky shops that sold everything from Halloween decor to books to vintage goods (Modern Millie is a must -- I bought the prettiest vintage brooch for only $14 on my birthday! Happy birthday to me!)

The red paint line dead ends at Salem Harbor, one of the oldest seaports in the country, where little boats and yachts float like little dots on the horizon. Nathaniel Hawthone's home, The House of the Seven Gables and Old Burying Point Cemetery are all right around the corner (more on these tomorrow), and the Salem Witch Museum isn't too far away, either. We skipped the witch museum via the advice of locals we met at a local coffee shop (Gulu Gulu), but they told us we couldn't leave without eating breakfast or lunch at Red's. We stopped in for lunch, ate mouthwatering crab rolls and left completely stuffed -- happy to follow the red line back to the Inn and walk off some of our lunch.

Part deux of our trip to Salem will come tomorrow, but in the meantime, I hope this helped put you all in the spirit for Halloween! Who is excited for a little trick-or-treating? James and I hope that we have our first batch of tiny ghouls and goblins ring our doorbell tonight...if we don't have a good crowd, you might find us in a sugar-induced coma due to all of the candy that will be leftover at our house. Eeks!

Road Trip Day 3: Boston, Massachusetts

Boston was another whirlwind day for us -- we arrived around lunchtime, and we were determined to see everything there was to see -- quickly -- in one afternoon. My friend Jon used to live in Boston, and he recommended a hop-on-hop-off trolley tour so we could see the major landmarks in Boston, learn some of the city's history and hop off the tour bus when we wanted to snap a few pictures. It was a great way to see Boston-- so many of the streets are old, twisty and confusing to drive if you're not a native.

James and I had one request for the trolley tour -- that our guide have a Boston accent (I die over Boston accents. Instant hotness, if you ask me). After hopping off and on the tour bus a couple of times, we finally got a fantastic -- and funny -- local tour guide, "Shiner." He had an uncanny resemblance to Ben Affleck, and I lived for the times he would say "cah" or "pahk" or any other word with an "r" that he skipped over with an "h." Swooon.

It was another beautiful afternoon, and we saw rows and rows of gorgeous Boston brownstones, Paul Revere's home and Christ Church, the major universities, Fenway Park, the original Cheers bar and even where JFK proposed to Jackie -- Billy Martin's Tavern in 1953. The Charles River was a pretty blue, and I wish we could've walked the bridge to take a few more pictures of the water. Boston is a lovely city, and we had a great time while we were there. We said goodbye around dinnertime and headed 25 miles north...to Salem and The Salem Inn, where we would spend the next couple of days. I'll be posting some photos of our trip to Salem next week!
